How to Make a Statement This Spring

What woman doesn't love to make a statement?  Even if you're a minimalist when it comes to jewelry, a bold, chunky necklace, by itself, is enough to make a statement.  This Spring, show off that neckline and get noticed with the season's hottest and boldest looks in necklaces.

A statement necklace is an easy, high-impact trend that is worth buying into.  Whether you’re a jeans-and-a-tee shirt kind of girl, or you wear heels every day – a statement necklace is a simple, yet powerful styling accessory. With summer 2013 just around the corner, runways and high fashion magazines have made it clear that this trend is not going out of style anytime soon.

Statement necklaces come in a variety of “sub-styles,” but in their most basic sense they are necklaces that are more extravagant than teardrops and pendants. They feature multiple stones, strands, or pendants, typically tapered or layered down to the most stunning piece presented at the bottom. While some statement necklaces are gaudy, many are not, and numerous options are available from the most elegant to the most gothic display.

When donning a bold necklace, it is important to keep the rest of your look simple and sleek. Let the necklace make the statement. Your outfit should be modest and humble: think little black dresses, daring maxi skirts, and collared oxfords – anything that is unpretentious and complements a potent accessory. However, don’t be afraid to mix statement necklaces with printed garments and vibrant colors. Sometimes breaking the rules designs a bold, high-end grungy look.  Avoid looks that are too “matchy-matchy” – be different, be unique, and invent your own style. That’s what fashion is all about!

While these necklaces make enough of a statement on their own, you can wear other accessories if you're wearing a statement necklace.  Just be cautious not to go overboard as too many accessories can create a tacky, unsophisticated look. Gaudy rings and excessive arm candy should be kept to a minimum. If you must, let your statement necklace shine with subtle posts, such as petite pearl earrings, or a thin leather waist belt. Many people think wearing extra jewelry on top of a statement necklace is a fashion faux pas, but if it’s done correctly, it can create a really polished, high fashion, trendy look. Small accents are key.

The beauty of this trend is that you can wear your statement necklace anywhere you want.  You can dress statement necklaces up or down. Whether it’s with jeans and a tee-shirt, or a ball-gown and heels – experiment with necklaces and let them add something special at any outfit in your wardrobe.
