You CAN Do Tuxedo

I have a weakness for tuxedos.  So dapper on a man.  So sleek and sophisticated on a woman.  Victoria Beckham, Justin Timberlake, Madonna and Cary Grant have all rocked them.  Need I say more?  Ever since Yves Saint Laurent shocked the world in 1966 when he introduced "le smoking," a tuxedo for women, designers ranging from Jean Paul Gaultier and Ralph Lauren to Giorgio Armani have riffed on the look again and again.  Invest in the best you can afford, as you are guaranteed to get years of wear out of it!

Why I Love This Look...

Men have it easy.  When it comes to dressing for formal occasions, black tie means black tie!  The tuxedo look gives a woman the equivalent so she doesn't have to spring for a gown she may only wear once. Tip:  If you don't know the dress code for a party or date, consider wearing a smoking jacket with jeans and pointy-toe pumps.  It looks cool and polished without trying too hard.

How to Pull It Off...

1. Stay away from all the classic accessories, such as a cummerbund or bow tie- they look way too cliche and costumey on a woman.
2. A tuxedo jacket can be chic worn over a silk camisole, a white T-shirt, or even bare skin as long as you don't reveal too much cleavage.
3. Wear feminine, sexy heels or glamorous earrings to offset the masculine overtones.
4. Tuxedo pants can be worn day or night when treated as a separate.  Substitute them for your favorite black trousers for an instant style upgrade.
