Be Queen of the Jungle in Safari Chic Fashions

Donna Karan

Whether you're an intrepid trekker or an armchair adventurer like me, you will find these muted tones and exotic patterns a welcome addition to your wardrobe. The mix of utilitarian details and animal prints lends itself to the urban (or suburban) jungle effortlessly.  This safari trend is great for those who find brightly colored pieces challenging, requiring more time and thought than they are willing to give.  If you tend to stick to your base camp of neutrals- black, beige, gray, white and khaki, but rely on prints and texture (like snakeskin) to amp things up, this look's perfect for you! That said, it's a snap to incorporate colorful accents into a neutral palette.  A pinch of saffron, orange, or chartreuse (pistachio) can add just the right amount of spice.  And the best part of all....you can forget camouflage! There is a reason safari clothing was designed in these earthy colors: they don't show dirt easily so they're practical and fashionable!

How to Pull It Off...

1. Unusual animal prints, such as zebra, tiger, and python bring graphic interest to a subdued outfit.  (Plus they never go out of style).  Just one piece will grab enough attention.
2. As with most trends, it's best not to go overboard. Try pairing a khaki shirt with a metallic pencil skirt, or cargo pants with a chiffon blouse.  The contrast of functional pieces with dressier ones creates a look that's sophisticated, yet relaxed.
3. Rustic accessories, like leather cuff bracelets or woven sandals, are perfect weekend accents.
