Horseplay: The Equestrian Trend

Remember when cheetas and zebras were having a fashion moment?  Well, now it’s the horse’s turn.  2014 is the year of the horse in the Chinese calendar—and it’s inspired a serious resurgence of equestrian style. So I'm happily saddling up with horse motifs, riding boots, and chic little saddle bags to embrace this trend. Fashion houses like Gucci, Hermès, and Ralph Lauren have built their aesthetics around traditional equestrian wears—from jodhpurs to dressage jackets and horsebit detailing in luxe leather goods. But this season, designers drew from their 'Town and Country’ inspiration and a more preppy muse to create effortlessly polished looks consisting of quilted vests, luxe knits and bow-tie blouses. Rich textured fabrics in decadently deep maroon, chestnut and olive also appeared on the Fall 2014 runways. My favorite accent- bridle and harness-like belts fastened around the torso for fierce, edgy equestrian appeal. Riding boots in luxe leather added the perfect finishing touch to this horseplay. From the quite literal printed sweaters, to more subtle polo-inspired outfits and sexy leather harnesses there’s an equestrian element for everyone.  Check out some of my favorites from the Massimo Dutti Fall 2014/Winter 2015 lookbook below.
